Cole Arguello's blog ::Duke defeats Notre Dame in Quarterfinals in Men's Lacrosse
With second-seeded Cornell and third-seeded John Hopkins already ousted from the 2011 men's lacrosse playoffs a day earlier (by upstarts Virginia and Denver, respectively), the lacrosse world looked toward last year's national champion and this year's top seed to restore some order on Sunday. Instead, chaos continued to reign, leaving next weekend's Final Four in Baltimore without any of this year's top four seeds. Unseeded Maryland (12-4) will return to its home state, but not in the way many had thought the Terrapins might have. Instead of going home to clean out their lockers for next year, Maryland will get a chance to reach the national title game against a familiar foe in Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke (14-5) after the Terrapins and Blue Devils each picked up on Sunday before 14,122 fans at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts where the Cavaliers and Pioneers left off in Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday with big quarterfinal round upsets. Senior attacker Grant Catalino scored with 32 second left in overtime to give Maryland a stunning 6-5 comeback victory in overtime over top-seeded Syracuse (15-2). The stirring ending wasn't the only surprise from the standpoint of an unseeded team taking out the tournament's top seed. The way the Terrapins accomplished that feat was just as shocking, especially with the Orange taking a 2-0 lead and Maryland going the first 26 minutes without a goal. Junior midfielder Drew Snider cut Syracuse's lead in half, to 2-1, with 3:58 left in the opening half, to touch off a four-goal Terrapin rally. Senior midfielder Scott LaRue scored 1:55 later to send the game to halftime tied, 2-2. Junior midfielder Jake Bernhardt and senior attacker Travis Reed added goals 1:55 apart in the middle of the third period to give the Terrapins a 4-2 lead, and after a Syracuse goal, LaRue found the net again with just one second left in the quarter to put Maryland up 5-3 heading into the final frame. The Terrapins were blanked in the fourth quarter though, as the Orange scored early in the period and then sent the game to overtime on a goal with 1:05 left in regulation. That set the stage for Catalino to put the top seed away and continue Maryland's magical playoff run which began with a win over another ACC opponent in a 13-6 first-round win over eight-seeded North Carolina (which set up Sunday's victory over Syracuse). Next, the Terrapins need to get past Duke, which will be looking to defend last year's national championship after upsetting fourth-seeded Notre Dame (11-3) one year after the Blue Devils edged the same Fighting Irish for last year's national title the same way Maryland beat Syracuse on Sunday (6-5, in overtime). This time, it was a 7-5 Duke victory, as the Blue Devils turned the tables on Notre Dame, rallying from a 3-1 deficit after the opening quarter to outscore the Irish 3-1 in the final period. Junior midfielder Justin Turri and sophomore midfielder David Lawson scored to tie the game, 3-3, by halftime. Turri scored again, late in the third quarter, to give Duke its first lead, 4-3, before Notre Dame tied the game, 4-4, with 2½ minutes left in the period. The Blue Devils then took control in the final quarter, scoring three straight times, on goals from freshman attacker Jordan Wolf, senior attacker Tucker Virtue, and junior midfielder Robert Rotanz. With a wild quarterfinal weekend in the books, Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium is set to host one of the most unlikely Final Fours in history despite the strong pedigrees of three ACC teams taking part. ACC member Virginia has a long history of success, with four national titles and 22 previous Final Four appearances, while Duke, winning its only national championship last year, will be playing in its seventh Final Four, its fourth straight, and sixth in the past seven years. And, this will be the 20th Final Four for Maryland, which has two national titles (1973, 1975). Still, none of those teams were expected to reach the Final Four at the start of the tournament considering the trio consists of squads that are either unseeded, or seeded just fifth or seventh. Virginia (an overtime winner over Bucknell) and Duke (a one-goal winner over Delaware) also barely got out of the opening round against unseeded opponents, making their quarterfinal upsets over Cornell and Notre Dame even more unexpected. And, the lone non-ACC team filling out the group in Baltimore is perhaps the greatest story of all, with Denver not only getting its first NCAA tournament win in the first round of this year's tournament, but being a rare team west of the Mississippi river to advance this far on a sport heavily dominated by eastern schools each year. The way it's gone so far, there's no telling what might happen next, and the final weekend should be as interesting as the rest tournament has been to this point. Virginia will meet Denver on Saturday at 4pm ET, followed by Maryland taking on Duke on ESPN2. The winners of those games will play on Memorial Day, back at M&T Bank Stadium, at 3:30 pm on ESPN. |
