Cole Arguello's blog ::Duke defeats Notre Dame in Quarterfinals in Men's Lacrosse










With               second-seeded               Cornell               and               third-seeded               John               Hopkins               already               ousted               from               the               2011               men's               lacrosse               playoffs               a               day               earlier               (by               upstarts               Virginia               and               Denver,               respectively),               the               lacrosse               world               looked               toward               last               year's               national               champion               and               this               year's               top               seed               to               restore               some               order               on               Sunday.

Instead,               chaos               continued               to               reign,               leaving               next               weekend's               Final               Four               in               Baltimore               without               any               of               this               year's               top               four               seeds.

Unseeded               Maryland               (12-4)               will               return               to               its               home               state,               but               not               in               the               way               many               had               thought               the               Terrapins               might               have.

Instead               of               going               home               to               clean               out               their               lockers               for               next               year,               Maryland               will               get               a               chance               to               reach               the               national               title               game               against               a               familiar               foe               in               Atlantic               Coast               Conference               rival               Duke               (14-5)               after               the               Terrapins               and               Blue               Devils               each               picked               up               on               Sunday               before               14,122               fans               at               Gillette               Stadium               in               Foxborough,               Massachusetts               where               the               Cavaliers               and               Pioneers               left               off               in               Hempstead,               N.Y.

on               Saturday               with               big               quarterfinal               round               upsets.

Senior               attacker               Grant               Catalino               scored               with               32               second               left               in               overtime               to               give               Maryland               a               stunning               6-5               comeback               victory               in               overtime               over               top-seeded               Syracuse               (15-2).

The               stirring               ending               wasn't               the               only               surprise               from               the               standpoint               of               an               unseeded               team               taking               out               the               tournament's               top               seed.

The               way               the               Terrapins               accomplished               that               feat               was               just               as               shocking,               especially               with               the               Orange               taking               a               2-0               lead               and               Maryland               going               the               first               26               minutes               without               a               goal.

Junior               midfielder               Drew               Snider               cut               Syracuse's               lead               in               half,               to               2-1,               with               3:58               left               in               the               opening               half,               to               touch               off               a               four-goal               Terrapin               rally.

Senior               midfielder               Scott               LaRue               scored               1:55               later               to               send               the               game               to               halftime               tied,               2-2.

Junior               midfielder               Jake               Bernhardt               and               senior               attacker               Travis               Reed               added               goals               1:55               apart               in               the               middle               of               the               third               period               to               give               the               Terrapins               a               4-2               lead,               and               after               a               Syracuse               goal,               LaRue               found               the               net               again               with               just               one               second               left               in               the               quarter               to               put               Maryland               up               5-3               heading               into               the               final               frame.

The               Terrapins               were               blanked               in               the               fourth               quarter               though,               as               the               Orange               scored               early               in               the               period               and               then               sent               the               game               to               overtime               on               a               goal               with               1:05               left               in               regulation.

That               set               the               stage               for               Catalino               to               put               the               top               seed               away               and               continue               Maryland's               magical               playoff               run               which               began               with               a               win               over               another               ACC               opponent               in               a               13-6               first-round               win               over               eight-seeded               North               Carolina               (which               set               up               Sunday's               victory               over               Syracuse).

Next,               the               Terrapins               need               to               get               past               Duke,               which               will               be               looking               to               defend               last               year's               national               championship               after               upsetting               fourth-seeded               Notre               Dame               (11-3)               one               year               after               the               Blue               Devils               edged               the               same               Fighting               Irish               for               last               year's               national               title               the               same               way               Maryland               beat               Syracuse               on               Sunday               (6-5,               in               overtime).

This               time,               it               was               a               7-5               Duke               victory,               as               the               Blue               Devils               turned               the               tables               on               Notre               Dame,               rallying               from               a               3-1               deficit               after               the               opening               quarter               to               outscore               the               Irish               3-1               in               the               final               period.

Junior               midfielder               Justin               Turri               and               sophomore               midfielder               David               Lawson               scored               to               tie               the               game,               3-3,               by               halftime.

Turri               scored               again,               late               in               the               third               quarter,               to               give               Duke               its               first               lead,               4-3,               before               Notre               Dame               tied               the               game,               4-4,               with               2½               minutes               left               in               the               period.

The               Blue               Devils               then               took               control               in               the               final               quarter,               scoring               three               straight               times,               on               goals               from               freshman               attacker               Jordan               Wolf,               senior               attacker               Tucker               Virtue,               and               junior               midfielder               Robert               Rotanz.

With               a               wild               quarterfinal               weekend               in               the               books,               Baltimore's               M&T               Bank               Stadium               is               set               to               host               one               of               the               most               unlikely               Final               Fours               in               history               despite               the               strong               pedigrees               of               three               ACC               teams               taking               part.

ACC               member               Virginia               has               a               long               history               of               success,               with               four               national               titles               and               22               previous               Final               Four               appearances,               while               Duke,               winning               its               only               national               championship               last               year,               will               be               playing               in               its               seventh               Final               Four,               its               fourth               straight,               and               sixth               in               the               past               seven               years.

And,               this               will               be               the               20th               Final               Four               for               Maryland,               which               has               two               national               titles               (1973,               1975).

Still,               none               of               those               teams               were               expected               to               reach               the               Final               Four               at               the               start               of               the               tournament               considering               the               trio               consists               of               squads               that               are               either               unseeded,               or               seeded               just               fifth               or               seventh.

Virginia               (an               overtime               winner               over               Bucknell)               and               Duke               (a               one-goal               winner               over               Delaware)               also               barely               got               out               of               the               opening               round               against               unseeded               opponents,               making               their               quarterfinal               upsets               over               Cornell               and               Notre               Dame               even               more               unexpected.

And,               the               lone               non-ACC               team               filling               out               the               group               in               Baltimore               is               perhaps               the               greatest               story               of               all,               with               Denver               not               only               getting               its               first               NCAA               tournament               win               in               the               first               round               of               this               year's               tournament,               but               being               a               rare               team               west               of               the               Mississippi               river               to               advance               this               far               on               a               sport               heavily               dominated               by               eastern               schools               each               year.

The               way               it's               gone               so               far,               there's               no               telling               what               might               happen               next,               and               the               final               weekend               should               be               as               interesting               as               the               rest               tournament               has               been               to               this               point.

Virginia               will               meet               Denver               on               Saturday               at               4pm               ET,               followed               by               Maryland               taking               on               Duke               on               ESPN2.

The               winners               of               those               games               will               play               on               Memorial               Day,               back               at               M&T               Bank               Stadium,               at               3:30               pm               on               ESPN.
