Cole Arguello's blog ::Notre Dame Football: Why Malik Zaire Should Be Irish's Starting Quarterback - Bleacher Report
A perennial favorite to have the best recruiting class in the nation, Notre Dame will be no exception in 2008. Already this year the school has received commitments from over a dozen top high school prospects. Among the best of these blue chip recruits are Dayne Crist (QB), Kyle Rudolph (TE), and John Goodman (WR). Dayne Crist (QB): With the verbal commitment of Dayne Crist, the Fighting Irish have gotten commitments from yet another blue chip quarterback recruit. Notre Dame which last year landed Jimmy Clausen, the nation's top quarterback recruit in 2007, seems set for the near future with the addition of Crist. This 6-5, 220 pound prospect is a major talent, who has great arm strength, mobility, and the ideal size you look for in a quarterback. Despite his size Dayne is capable of running a 4.6 40, which provides an added dimension to his passing. While his arm has never been questioned, Crist still needs a little more polish and consistency. Intense, competitive, and intelligent, this prospect is no slouch in the classroom either, where a good GPA and a 1710 SAT score make him an ideal student-athlete. An All-State selection as a junior, despite having suffered through a horrific back injury during the season opener, Crist exhibits the heart and leadership you want to see in a quarterback. A product of a good football program at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame HS, Crist has been a starter since part way through his sophomore year when he replace heralded passer Garrett Green, after Green suffered an injury. Playing at Sherman Oaks, a school that recently ran off a 35 game winning streak, Crist is set to have a fantastic senior season. Kyle Rudolph (TE): Even among a good recruiting class at Tight End the 6-6, 230 pound Rudolph stands out. Kyle has all the attributes you want to see in a Tight End, including speed, good hands and great concentration. He is an all around athlete that not only won Second Team All-State honors in football, but won First Team honors in basketball as well. His athletic abilities allow him to make tough acrobatic catches. Yet Kyle is not one dimensional on the football field, as he is a good blocker as well. Though his school, Elder High School in Cincinnati suffered through a 6-4 season last year, Rudolph remained a highly sought after prep star who has received offers from such (other) big name programs as Michigan and Ohio State. Look for Kyle to have another excellent season, possibly bulking up a bit to get ready for college competition. John Goodman (WR): Despite lacking the type of speed you would expect from a highly recruited receiver (4.7 in the 40), John Goodman still has deceptive speed out in the football field, which makes the 6-3 senior a deep threat at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne Indiana. Goodman had an impressive junior year in which he made 44 catches and score 9 touchdowns while averaging over 19 yards a catch. Not afraid to make the tough catches over the middle, Goodman runs precise routes and is a lot tougher than his 185 pound frame would indicate. Spurring away interest from Michigan and Indiana, John was one of the first recruits to commit to Notre Dame for 2008. |
